Kiln-dried logs - For the warmth you need to get you through next winter

" A house with no fireplace is a house without a heart."

Fireplaces have long been considered the heart of the home and the true focal point of a room. They provide comfort and a feeling of content when the weather outside is cold and bleak. It’s a place to share intimate talks, tell stories, or just sit together around a warm glow.

The traditional log-burning fireplace is still considered the perfect choice for a warm, rustic living room in the U.K. Indeed, a log burning fireplace is classic and timeless, but to achieve a high temperature with little to no smoke, it’s all about the fuel… You need wood that’s not ‘green’, it must be sufficiently dry and well-seasoned. For thoroughly dry wood, kiln dried logs are the superior fuel.

Low moisture content

Kiln-dried logs light very quickly, and compared to seasoned logs, kiln dried logs have a lower moisture content. This low moisture content is what enables you to start a fire quickly and keep it going for a long time. So, if you have a fireplace that produces lots of smoke, but little heat, your problem is the moisture content of your wood.

Kiln-dried logs provide a cleaner burn without producing lots of smoke. Smoke can be an issue on multiple levels, firstly it can contain creosote, a by-product of wood combustion which forms a layer in your chimney or flue over time.

Did you know that kiln dried logs have a moisture content of less than 20%? As per the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) recommendations, wood with a moisture content of less than 15-20% is considered efficient and environmentally conscious.

With freshly cut (green) wood, the moisture content is extremely high and it will require months of seasoning until it is suitable to burn. However even seasoned wood will always retain some moisture content due to the residual humidity in the air. So, no matter how long you leave your logs to dry, they will always have a certain amount of moisture. On the other hand, kiln dried logs are not affected by atmospheric humidity as they are dried using a kiln. This means that kiln dried logs burn for longer, and hence they are considered good value despite their slightly higher initial cost.

You also need to be careful about how and where you stack your logs. They need to be stacked in a manner that allows for proper air circulation between them. If you do cover them up, remember to just cover the top and not the entire stack as this will increase the chance of the wood rotting.
