Logs Of The 20th Century

There’s nothing like coming home to a warm, crackling wood fire on a cold winter’s day. You may not be aware, but not all wood burns the same way. Wet wood for example has a high moisture content, producing much more smoke.

For the best fireside experience you need to feed your stove dried wood. However, once again not all dried wood is equal. If your stove glass blackens or your chimney is filled with soot and your wood struggles to burn, it's due to the wood not being fully dried. Whatever the time of the year, every log bulk you buy should have a moisture content of less than 20%. This ensures your fires will light easily, burn cleanly and produce maximum heat. Wood that is dried in a kiln makes for quality firewood, with a moisture content of less than 20%.

How are kiln dried logs made?

The process of kiln drying involves warm air being circulated all around the wood inside of a kiln chamber for maximum drying. This process helps to evaporate the moisture content of the log, whilst limiting any damage to the wood and its potential energy value. Thus with kiln drying, a low moisture level is ensured resulting in the optimum burning experience. Taking our environmental responsibilities seriously, Green Olive Firewood uses kilns that are powered by wood boilers, using wood waste products.

Why Kiln dried logs

With kiln dried logs you can be sure of a moisture content less than 20%, whereas naturally seasoned logs with a low moisture content are relatively hard to find.
Kiln dried logs reduce deposits on your stove and chimney lining. Having a low moisture content means the wood burns cleanly with less soot and tarring.
Economy & quality - just one kiln dried log can generate the same amount of heat as three seasoned logs. With this equation you can see that Quality kiln dried wood is actually better value for money.
Availability - Our kiln dried logs are available all year round. You don’t have to rely on the hope of a good summer to dry out your damp logs.

Green Olive Firewood is BSL accredited and you can be sure that all our kiln dried logs have a moisture content less than 20%. We manage our own woodlands and our kiln dried logs are dried-out in our West Sussex kiln. Available in net bags, Barrow Bags & 1.2m3 bulk bags, our kiln dried logs are split into small lengths for your ease of use.

Choosing between real logs and heat logs first relies upon knowing the difference between them. Fire logs have been widely used as firewood for over millenium, but recently heat logs have become a more attractive alternative. Let's have a look at what exactly heat logs are and how they differ from traditional logs.

Heat logs - Heat logs are an alternative to traditional fuels such as logs or fossil fuels. They are designed to be used for both indoor and outdoor fires. They are made from compressed raw materials (such as sawdust, wood chip or wood flour) and formed into compact, consistent blocks or log shapes. The compression rate of these blocks can be as high as 1000kg/m3 - the higher the compression, the better the quality of the heat log. Heat logs often go by another name, being referred to as ‘wood briquettes’.

Properties of heat logs

Extra dry with a moisture content of less than 10%
Have a high heat output between 4,800 and 5,000 kWh/tonne depending on compaction and tree species. A high heating value translates to your room heating up faster and to a higher temperature.
Easy to light (compared to a traditional fire log)
Burns cleaner creating very little ash
Burns more efficiently causing fewer chimney and flue problems
        Easier to handle and store
        Environment friendly
